Wellington is built on one of the world’s most seismically active regions. The area has high seismic activity, with a major fault plane running through the centre of the city, and several others nearby.
Rondo’s Technical Services team had to design Rondo products and their installation to resist the force of a large scaled earthquake that will still allow the hospital to remain operating after even the most disastrous seismic events.
To meet this requirement the entire Wellington Hospital is constructed on columns which have been founded on the rock below. On top of each column is an elastomeric bearing and on top of hundreds of these bearings, the entire city hospital is constructed.
Rondo’s Technical Services department designed all of the hospitals internal walls and ceilings, resulting in many unique design solutions. Some of the walls are almost 5 metres high.
