Servicing the second fastest growing region in the western world, Brisbane International Airport has now surpassed passenger numbers of both Sydney and Melbourne with over 4 million coming through in the last 12 months. Given this rapid growth in passenger numbers in recent times, the Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) commissioned Bovis Lend Lease, one of Australia’s leading construction companies, to undertake the $260m Bligh Voller Nield Architect designed project.
Working on the most significant projects around the world is something our customers have come to expect over the past 40 odd years, so when North West Commercial Industries (NWCI) engaged our services on the Brisbane International Airport Terminal Expansion, the Rondo team in Queensland were well equipped to help.
An $11m internal fit out such as this, is nothing unusual to the team at NWCI either. One of Australia’s leading commercial ceiling contractor’s, NWCI anticipate having over 100 workers on site at he height of the project as well as two construction managers, four leading hands and three full time site administrators.
A project of this nature usually throws up a number of unique challenges, and this one is no exception. Having to deal with around 1.5kms of luggage conveyor systems and the concrete penetrations in which they travel, required the Rondo engineering team to design a series of fire rated shaft wall systems. Strong wind loads required external wall framing over significant spans to be designed to cater for a variety of cladding including metal deck external and layered plasterboard internally. Adding to the complexity of some of these issues is the reality of operating in a secure, fully operational International Terminal.
As the project proceeds, Rondo will be continually challenged to adapt the experience of over 40 years to deliver timely advice, innovative design solutions and high quality systems both practically and economically…something no other company is as equipped to do.
