Gold Coast University Light Rail Station, QLD

09/09/2021

The underground light rail station has officially been launched on the Gold Coast. The five year, $1 billion dollar project required builders GoldLinQ and Architectus Architects to collaborate in meeting the guidelines and needs of the project which has led to its ultimate success.

Contractors Precision Interior Walls and Ceilings (PIWC) primary responsibility was the installation of the specialist linings on curved feature ceilings. PIWC Construction Manager, Ashley O’Connor mentions working closely with Rondo, and using CAD drawings to create a ceiling system before the panels were even made. “We designed and ensured the ceiling systems project’s specific design criteria were met”, said Ashley.

Our technical team provided PIWC with the necessary advice to full specific design requirements (multiple curves/angles, external wind loads, acoustic guides), using various Top Hat sections and Steel Stud and Track systems. Ashley says these products meant they could cantilever the aluminium panels up to 350mm, while on an angle running both ways to withstand the high level of finish and wind loadings required.

PIWC took out the AWCI 2015 Excellence in Plastering – Specialist Linings Award for this project, getting the credit and recognition they deserve.
